Florida Keys and Key West

On Friday afternoon, after lunch at South Beach, we headed off for the Florida Keys.  We had the top down on the Mustang, and we were cruising!

It's about 3 or so hours from Miami to Key West.  We stopped a couple of times,  for rain (we had to put the top back up), to get fuel for the car, and to peruse the "sandal outlet".

The sun was setting as we went through the keys, so I didn't get many shots.  But, a few factoids about the Florida Keys Highway.... Important due to some of the photos...

The Keys themselves were settled long before the overseas railway was built in the 1910s.  At that point there was no highway, but the construction of the highway was being worked on during the 1930, a project that had alot of WWI veterans involved.  A hurricane hit in 1935, that damaged the railway line, along with killing over 200 of the WWI veterans, which obviously caused alot of anger (the veterans were housed in non-reinforced housing), and led to a major inquiry.   The railway line was never repaired, and transportation was then only via the overseas highway.

Pigeon Key (which is part of the the 7 mile long bridge) doesn't have vehicular access. Part of the trainline was still in use up to 2008 for vehicles, but it was deemed unsafe, so is now closed to all but pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
