Old Fort Jackson

Old Fort Jackson is the oldest fort in Georgia.  It was originally a earthen battery from the Revolutionary War, which was deserted after the war.  As part of the fortifying the coastline after the war, Fort Jackson was built between 1808 and 1812 by a 21 yr old.

During the Civil War, once Savannah fell to the Union soldiers, the Confederates fled, burning down the barracks etc inside the fort down, and scuttling the ironclad ships out in the harbour.

  1. A 21 yr old? Did he build it physically by himself or did he supervise /organise the building?

Lots of forts in this part of the country. Very different to Australia's history!!

    1. He went to West Point Military academy at 15, and was an engineer. He designed/supervised the building.
